SHIMLA SUMMER FESTIVAL

Shimla, the State capital of Himachal Pradesh is one of the most popular hill stations of the country and is a famous tourist destination. As the former ‘summer capital’ of British India, Shimla has a rare range of built heritage and is surrounded by thick forests of pine, Himalayan oak, flowering  Rhododendron and tall cedars-the ‘almost-legendary’ deodar trees. This magnificent setting and picture of an idyllic retreat in the mid-ranges of the Himalayan mountains is framed by high peaks that trace a snow-clad line across the north.

Today’s Shimla retains a substantial measure of a distinct lifestyle that has grace, leisure, and elegance as its hallmarks. The town also has well-developed facilities and numerous attractions. The annual Shimla Summer Festival is one of the attractions for tourists and locals as well. It is held in the last week of May/1st week of June every year.

Started in 1960, the Summer Festival holds a series of events, which includes cultural evenings, star nights, flower shows, painting competitions, etc. The main function is held at the Ridge Shimla, in the heart of the city. Famous singers, local dance troupes, musical bands, entertaining artists, and others put up lively performances. The festival is a good occasion where the tourists get to part take in the holiday season. The Summer Festival is also a bouquet of the State’s cultural diversity and is a platform for display of local talent.

From the city, the nearby visitable places include- Jakhu Temple, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Sankat Mochan Temple, Tara Devi Temple, Kufri, Fagu, Mashobra, Craignano, Naldehra and Tattapani

Getting there: Shimla is connected by air, rail, and road. It is 120 km from Chandigarh and 375 km from Delhi. A narrow gauge rail track connects Shimla from Kalka.

Places to stay: Shimla city andits  surroundings have many private budget and premium hotels to ensure a comfortable stay. ‘The Peterhof’ and ‘Hotel Holiday Home’ are two premium hotels run by Himachal Tourism are located in the town.

Activities: The activities include cultural programs, star nights, flower shows, painting competitions, etc.
