Wanphrang K Diengdoh is an award winning filmmaker hailing from Shillong whose work surround the issues regarding tribal identity. He has been the recipient of many awards and fellowships, and he was in Bangalore recently to screen and talk about his recent film, “Because We Did Not Choose”. The film tries to retrace the steps of tribal laborers from the Northeast who took part in the Second World War.

His interest in the project grw out of his upbrining in Sillong where he frequented the local traditional market known as Lewduh, where a French monument called Motphran is situated. “There was not much information about the monument or about the names of the people mentioned on the monument. We studied about the WW1 in school but the history books never talked abou the participation of the people from the area,” says Wanphrang in an interaction with CE.
