Around Gangtok in 7 days

Mesmerizing, bewitching Gangtok.

It all began with a quest for an adventure crammed into the span of 7 days. The million-dollar question pops up as usual… hills or the ocean? Weighing the pros and cons of both, and because of the fact that it was winter (we enjoyed the cold and the dressing up in leather jackets and layers!), hills were finalized. An overnight train to New Jalpaiguri, a few drowsy hours spent shivering and yawning at the station and the car sets off, at the crack of dawn on the six-hour drive to Gangtok. The pictures should explain the rest.

The rising sun turns the sky over NJP station crimson.
First light at NJP and time to set off on the six-hour drive to Gangtok!
Chhangu Lake Market
Cheap jackets and winter wear! The chhangu lake market falls on the way to Nathula pass and is a must visit. The extremely reasonable prices makes you spend much more than you intended to.
Getting colder!
Our car as seen from down below.
Thatchy rooftops and fog greet us as we trod along!
Adapt to survive; the stray dogs there have so much fur!
A sight for sore eyes.
This one snuck up behind me and posed for a potrait! Very photogenic dogs, have to say.
Ah, finally! The Nathuls Pass can be seen up top. Sadly they don’t allow cameras up there for security reasons.
Winding, picturesque roads.
Our trusty old car!
The fog really started dampening moods and taking clear shots was impossible.
Yaks! For a paltry sum of money you get to ride these beasts for a few minutes.

B-E-A-utiful Gangtok!
The streets leading to Lal Market.

Even more beautiful at night! The bright lights in the top-left corner is MG Marg seen from a distance.
MG Marg Market, bustling with people.

Sunup over Gangtok.

  1. Wow! I used to live in the city some 17 years back ! A lot of things seem to have changed. The M G Road looks emptier now. Back then it used packed with shared taxis and bustling traffic.
Can never ever forget the smell of “laal bazar”.
Is ‘Varja Cinema hall’ still up there ?
